Pocinho is a place in Portugal and belongs to the district of Vila Nova de Foz Côa , in the district of Guarda .
geography
The place is located on the Douro River , about 40 km west of the border with Spain. It is 8 km from the southern district town of Vila Nova de Foz Côa and 62 km from Macedo de Cavaleiros to the north .
In Pocinho, the districts of Guarda and Bragança come together with the districts of Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Torre de Moncorvo .
Transport and sights
Pocinho is part of the Vila Nova de Foz Côa district, which has two UNESCO World Heritages , namely the oldest protected wine-growing region in the world, Alto Douro , and the numerous archaeological excavations of the Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa .
The listed Pocinho train station is now the end point of the Linha do Douro . The railway bridge over the Douro is also a listed building.
In the vicinity of the village is the Pocinho dam with a small port for inland vessels with a maximum capacity of 300 tons. Fishing and water sports are practiced at the reservoir.
The expressway IP2 arriving from the south (here also European route E 802) ends in Pocinho and continues as the national road N215 to Macedo de Cavaleiros in the north.
Personalities
In 1962 the author and politician Francisco José Viegas was born in Pocinho.
