The Picote dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Picote ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Bragança district near the village of Picote . It is located in the international nature reserve Douro ( Portuguese Parque Natural do Douro Internacional ) and dams the Douro , which forms the border with Spain here.

The project to build the dam began in 1953. The construction was completed in 1958. The dam is used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a double-curved concrete arch dam with a height of 100 m above the foundation level . The top of the wall is at a height of 480 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 139 m and its width is 3.45 m. The volume of the structure is 205,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief with four gates. A maximum of 600 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 11,000 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 11,000 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 471 m (maximum 478 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 2.44 km² and holds 63 million m³ of water - of which 13.43 (or 13.35) million m³ can be used Electricity generation can be used.

Picote I power plant

The Picote run-of-river power plant is one of Portugal's medium-sized hydropower plants with an installed capacity of 180 (or 195) MW . The average annual generation is 1,038 (or 838, 868.6 or 941) million kWh . It is used to cover medium and peak loads .

In 1958 three machines with a maximum of 60 (or 62 or 65) MW each were put into operation. They are located in an underground machine house on the north side of the dam. Both the vertical shaft Francis turbines and the associated generators were supplied by Sorefame . The generators provide 72 MVA , their nominal voltage is 15 kV . The rated speed of the turbines is 166.7 / min.

The minimum height of fall is 63 m, the maximum 74 m. The maximum flow rate is 117 m³ / s per turbine.

The power plant is owned by the CPPE but operated by EDP .

Picote II power plant

From March 2007 the Picote II power plant was built. In December 2011 an additional turbine with an output of 246 MW was put into operation. The associated generator has an output of 270 MVA . The machine is located in its own underground machine house, 150 m below the surface. The average annual production is 244 million kWh . The costs amounted to € 140 million.
