history

The Celtic sculpture by Picote

Rock paintings and other finds prove a prehistoric settlement. There were at least three fortified Castro culture settlements here . The sculpture of a sow found in 1952 attests to the pagan religious customs that lasted until the 4th century BC. Were practiced here. After that, the area became part of the Roman Empire . As a result it was Christianized and restructured. The surrounding Castros were given up, and the Castro Castelhar acquired as a civitas regional importance as an administrative center. There were u. a. Remains of a villa rustica and over 20 Roman marble tombs found, which are now in museums in Miranda do Douro and the district capital of Bragança.

The Moors conquered almost the entire Iberian Peninsula from 711 , but it is not known that Arabs have stayed in today's Picote. In the course of the Reconquista , however, a small fortress was probably built here, to which people temporarily fled, as the finds of medieval ceramics and a Leonese coin suggest. Since Picote was listed as an existing municipality in the various royal surveys of the 13th century, the place was probably continuously inhabited. In 1530 it had only 62 inhabitants.

The Picote dam

In 1796 227 people lived here. 90 made a living from agriculture, while the others made wool or were tailors, blacksmiths and carpenters. The manufacture of bricks and silk should also be mentioned. Until the 20th century wool linen was here hand-formed and spun, woven baskets, olive oil and wine produced, liquor burned, pigeons bred and baked bread, partly using the water mills on the river of the village, which here in the Douro flows .

Picote received a development boost from the construction of the Picote dam from 1953. When it opened in 1958, the construction workers moved away, leaving the employees of the hydropower plant and their families, for whom a modern quarter outside the village was built. In addition to the decreasing number of employees, there was a wave of emigration in the 1960s and 1970s. a. to France. After all operating facilities were relocated to central control centers, the remaining employees of the power plants finally left the site in the 1990s.

The emigration from the community continues to this day due to the lack of economic impetus, similar to most other communities in the region. Picote remained an independent municipality after the administrative reorganization in Portugal in 2013, while a number of other, also shrinking municipalities were merged in the Miranda do Douro district.

Not far from the village is the Picote dam, which was commissioned in 1958 . In this context, the village of Barrocal do Douro, designed according to the principles of an ideal city, was created. It consisted of residential quarters with semi-detached houses and functional buildings, and housed employees and families of the energy company (later EDP ) and previously the employees of the companies involved in the construction. After the operation and control of the hydropower plant were brought together in central locations in the 1990s, the avant-garde place increasingly fell into disrepair. The Miranda do Douro district administration bought some buildings in 2000 and established a number of buildings there. a. a youth hostel. From 2002 a concept for the restoration and upgrading of the village was developed. The village has been a listed building since 2011.
