Duas Igrejas (Mirandés: Dues Eigreijas ) is a municipality in the district of Miranda do Douro in north-eastern Portugal . It belongs to the area in which the only regional language of Portugal is spoken, the Mirandés .

history

Finds prove a prehistoric settlement, including the rock paintings in the Abrigo Rupestre da Solhapa caves .

In the Middle Ages the place was a military base. The municipality of Cércio, which later became part of the municipality of Duas Igrejas, was already listed in the royal surveys of 1258. During the Seven Years' War (1756–1763) the area was briefly occupied by a Franco-Spanish army. The parish hall of Duas Igrejas was the temporary headquarters of the Spanish general Nicolás de Carvajal y Lancaster , the Marqués de Sarriá .

Duas Igrejas was the terminus of the Linha do Sabor railway line . Since it was closed in 1988, the municipality has no longer had a railway connection.

Via the IC5, Duas Igrejas with the district town of Miranda do Douro located 9 km northeast and Mogadouro located 36 km southwest is away.
