Palaçoulo (Mirandés: Palaçuolo ) is a municipality ( Freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Miranda do Douro . It has 554 residents (as of June 30, 2011).

geography

Palaçoulo is 18 km southwest of the district town of Miranda do Douro. The village of Prado Gatão, two kilometers southeast of Palaçoulo, belongs to the municipality . The IC5 highway (Vila do Conde - Miranda do Douro) runs through the southern municipal area .

history

Archaeological finds show traces of human settlement as far back as the Neolithic Age , including rock paintings. The alleged, simple fortifications of a hill fort (Portuguese: Castro) date from the Celtic times . Traces of various residential complexes have also been found here from the time of the Roman occupation, and the name of the community goes back to this time. Thus, from the Latin name Palatiolum (diminutive of palace), over the medieval Palaciolo the mirandesische name Palaçuolo developed the in Portuguese corresponds to the name Palaçoulo.

In 1757 the Freguesia Prado Gatão was dissolved and came to Palaçoulo. The village Águas Vivas , which originally belonged to the municipality, was raised to a separate municipality with effect from July 3, 2001.

Culture, sports and sights

The non-profit cultural and sports association Caramonico - Associação Cultural para o Desenvolvimento Integrado de Palaçoulo (German: cultural association for the integrated development of Palaçoulo) is organized in three areas. The first is dedicated to hunting and fishing, the second to sports (especially football and cycling), and the third to folk dancing . The stick dance group Grupo de Pauliteiros , which performs nationally and internationally, deserves a special mention here.

In addition to the main church ( Igreja Matriz ) of Palaçoulo , consecrated to the local saint Michael , and various chapels in the municipality ( Igreja de Prado Gatão , Capela de Nossa Senhora da Ascensão , Capela de Santo Cristo , Capela de São Roque , Capela de São Sebastião ), the archaeological To visit excavation sites, especially the Roman ones on the Toural , the presumably Celtic fortification remains (Penha de Castro) and prehistoric rock paintings.

The Casa Grande is the largest mansion in the district. The Centro de artesanato shows traditional handicrafts and semi-industrial local products, while the privately run Museu Rural focuses on agricultural life.

economy

Agriculture continues to be an important factor, especially grain cultivation (wheat, oats, barley, rye, lupins, etc.). The most important employer is the manufacturing industry with various, mostly smaller industrial companies that manufacture barrels, building materials and the nationally known knives and cutlery from Palaçoulo. Craft businesses, such as carpenters and bakeries, and craft businesses are also important employers. In addition, the facilities for the care of the elderly, the health station, the kindergarten and the two primary schools in the community offer employment.
