Águas Vivas ( Mirandés : Augas Bibas ) is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Miranda do Douro . 163 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).

geography

Located in the plateau of the Alto Trás-os-Montes , the place is about 15 km away from the eastern district town of Miranda do Douro, and about 60 km from the northern district capital Bragança .

history

The place was probably founded by Christian settlers during the Reconquista , favored by the abundant springs of clear water. So Águas Vivas means living water in German . After the establishment of the independent Kingdom of Portugal in 1139, Águas Vivas became part of the municipality of Palaçoulo .

In the Spring of 1762, during the Seven Years' War , troops of the Kingdom of Spain crossed the border at Miranda do Douro and fought in the area of Águas Vivas with resistance troops, which were formed from local militias and regular units of the Portuguese crown. The film Guerra de Mirandum ( Eng .: War of Mirandum), shot in 1984 by director Fernando Matos Silva , u. a. with Teresa Madruga and Ruy Furtado , covers this historical episode and was partly recorded in the area of Águas Vivas.

The community experienced a significant upswing thanks to the nearby mined tungsten , which was in great demand during the Second World War . After the increasing loss of importance of the mines in the second half of the 20th century, around a third of the population emigrated, mainly to the up-and-coming industrial areas of France and Germany. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the country's economic boom, accelerated by its accession to the EU in 1986, the population increased again here. On July 12, 2001, Águas Vivas was separated from the municipality of Palaçoulo and became independent.

Culture, sports and sights

The Igreja de Santa Catarina , the parish church ( Igreja Paroquial de Águas Vivas ), has been a listed building since 2003.

The Associação Cultural e Recreativa de Águas Vivas is an important cultural engine in the community.
