The Almendra Dam on the Tormes River is the highest dam in Spain . The dam is located on the border of the provinces of Salamanca and Zamora , near Almendra .

The reservoir has a storage space of 2649 million cubic meters, but in some cases there is also an indication of 2413 million. It was built to generate electricity and is operated by Iberdrola. The hydropower plant called Villarino has an output of 810 megawatts . The water is transported through a 15 km long tunnel. The dam consists of three structures of different types: the middle section is a double-curved arch dam ; this reaches the maximum height of 202 m. The two sides are formed by two differently constructed weight dams. The right one has retaining walls similar to a pier dam .
