Pingxi ( Chinese 平溪 區 , Pinyin Píngxī Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Pêng-khe ) is a district of the city of New Taipei in northern Taiwan , Republic of China . It is the district with the lowest population in the city.
location
The largely hilly Pingxi is surrounded by the neighboring districts of Xizhi and Shiding in the west, Pinglin in the south, and Shuangxi and Ruifang in the east and northeast. In the north the district borders on the city of Keelung . The river Keelung rises in the area of Pingxi and flows through the district in a north-westerly direction, interrupted by a few waterfalls.
History and meaning
The area of Pingxi, which is sparsely populated due to its hilly inland location, gained economic importance due to the existing coal deposits at the beginning of the 20th century during the Japanese rule over Taiwan, and this was also the reason why it was connected to the railway network. After the Second World War, coal supplies ran low and mining ceased at the end of the 20th century. The resulting loss of jobs meant that the district's population fell sharply and is now the lowest of all New Taipei districts.
Today Pingxi is primarily of tourist importance. Attractions are the large and small waterfalls of the Keelung River, but above all the remains of the coal mines and old railway lines. In the Museum of the Taiwanese Coal Mining you can get an overview of the history of mining and visit the tunnel of a former mine.
Every year for the Chinese Lantern Festival , the Kong Ming Lantern Festival takes place in Pingxi .
