history

The original name of the place, Saⁿ-tēng-po • (written 三重 埔) comes from the Min-Nan language of the Chinese immigrants who populated the area of what is now Greater Taipei in the 18th and 19th centuries and means "third level" . The name indicates the chronological sequence of settlement of the plains on the Tamsui River. Later the name was shortened to the first two syllables and pronounced Sam-tiông (written 三重), which results in Sanchong in high Chinese .

The originally rural town soon developed into a flourishing business and trade center thanks to the shipping traffic on the Tamsui River and the growing importance of the neighboring city of Taipei. In 1889 the Taipei Bridge was built over the Tamsui River. Since then, it has been an important traffic route connecting Sanchong with the city of Taipei.

In the course of the industrialization of northern Taiwan at the time of the Japanese rule over Taiwan , the population of Sanchong grew so that it received the status of a township (鎮 zhèn) in 1947 and the status of a town (市 shì) in Taipei County in 1962. After the district was dissolved, Sanchong was incorporated as a district into the newly formed New Taipei City in 2010.
