Shiding ( Chinese 石碇 區 , Pinyin Shídìng Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Chio̍h-tiàⁿ Khu ) is a district of New Taipei City in northern Taiwan , Republic of China .
Location and importance
The predominantly hilly district is located on the southeastern edge of the Taipei Basin . The Beishi River flows through it. Its neighboring districts are Xindian and Shenkeng in the west, Xizhi in the north, Pingxi and Pinglin in the east and Wulai in the south . Shiding is one of the largest and most sparsely populated districts in New Taipei. Due to the hilly location, there is little agriculture. In the 20th century, Shiding gained a certain importance due to its hard coal deposits ; However, mining was scaled back sharply in the last decades of the century and stopped completely in 2000. Today, shiding is best known for the Feicui Reservoir , Taiwan's second largest reservoir, which is largely on its territory .
The Buddhist Huafan University is located in Shiding .
