Sanxia ( Chinese 三峽 區 , Pinyin Sānxiá Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Sam-kiap ) is the second largest district of the city of New Taipei in northern Taiwan .
location
Sanxia is located on the southwestern edge of New Taipei City and borders the Yingge , Shulin and Tucheng Districts to the north, Xindian and Wulai Districts to the east and southeast , and Taoyuan City to the west and southwest . The district is mainly hilly and is traversed by the Sanxia , Dahan and Hengxi rivers.
History and meaning
The area of today's Sanxia was settled by Chinese immigrants along the then navigable rivers Dahan and Sanxia in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since these two as well as the river Hengxi arise in this area, the original name of the place in Taiwan was Saⁿ-kak-éng (三角 湧; German about "three sources"). At the time of the Japanese rule over Taiwan , the place got its current name. In the Japanese colonial era, Sanxia gained economic importance through the production of indigo .
Today, the district is primarily of tourist importance due to its traditional buildings and natural beauties along the rivers. The National University of Taipei is also located in Sanxia .
Sights and special features
A major attraction is the Sanxias Built in 1769, restored several times and with sculptures of Sanxiaer artist Li Meishu decorated Zushi Temple. Originally dedicated to the Buddhist saint Qingshui , it is now a mix of Buddhist and Daoist folk religions. A highlight of the temple year is the “pig sacrifice” that takes place around the time of the Chinese New Year , in which a fattening pig selected in a competition is sacrificed.
The Li Meishu Gallery , in which the artist's works are exhibited, commemorates Li Meishu . Another important museum is the Hakka Culture Museum, which opened in 2005 and is the largest Hakka museum in Taiwan. Another attraction for visitors is the old main street, which is lined with historic buildings from the Japanese colonial era.
The main campus of Taipei National University is located in Sanxia .
