Shenkeng ( Chinese  深坑 區 , Pinyin Shēnkēng Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Chhim-kheⁿ khu ) is a district of the city of New Taipei in the north of the island of Taiwan , Republic of China .

location

Shenkeng is located on the north and south banks of the Jingmei River . The district is bounded to the west by the Nangang and Wenshan districts of Taipei City and to the east by the Shiding District of New Taipei City .

History and meaning

The name of the district means "Tiefer Graben" or "deep pit". The plain of today's Shengkeng, originally inhabited by Taiwanese natives , was settled and reclaimed by Chinese immigrants in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the rural district is mainly famous for its tofu , which attracts many tourists and has earned the city the nickname “Tofu City”.

The private Tungnan University is located in Shenkeng District .
