Gongliao

Gongliao ( Chinese  貢 寮 區 , Pinyin Gòngliáo Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Khong-á-liâu ) is a district of the city of New Taipei in northern Taiwan .

Location and importance

Gongliao is the easternmost district of New Taipei City. It borders on the neighboring districts of Ruifang and Shuangxi in the west, on the district of Yilan in the south and on the Pacific Ocean in the north and east . Cape Santiago , located here, is the easternmost point on the island of Taiwan . Due to its coastal location and the surrounding waters rich in fish, fishing has always been the main industry in the area.

On the coast of Gongliao is the not yet commissioned and controversial nuclear power plant number 4 .

history

The area of today's Gongliao District was originally inhabited by Taiwanese indigenous people. In 1626 a Spanish fleet reached the Cape in the far east and named it Cape Santiago . This name has been preserved as a non-Chinese name for the cape to this day; the Chinese name is 三貂角 (Sāndiāojiǎo). Gongliao is also home to Yenliu Beach , where the first Japanese army disembarked at the beginning of Japanese rule over Taiwan in 1895.

tourism

Since the foothills of the Taiwanese Central Mountains reach close to the coast, Gongliao's landscape is very attractive and attracts many day-trippers and tourists. A popular sight is the lighthouse at Cape Santiago, the easternmost point of the island of Taiwan. Another attraction is the Caoling Path , originally used by the indigenous people , a hiking trail that leads through the north-eastern hilly landscape and connects Gongliao with the town of Dali in the adjacent Yilan County.

On Fulong -Beach of Gongliao hosts the annual Hohaiyan-rock festival held.
