Ruifang ( Chinese 瑞芳 區 , Pinyin Ruìfāng Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Sūi-hong ) is a district of the city of New Taipei in northern Taiwan , Republic of China .
location
Ruifang is located on the northeastern edge of New Taipei City. Its northern border is the East China Sea , in the south Ruifang borders on its neighboring districts Gongliao , Shuangxi and Pingxi and in the west on the city of Keelung . The largely hilly terrain of the district represents the northernmost foothills of the Taiwanese Central Mountains. Ruifang is traversed by the Keelung River.
History and sights
The originally isolated and sparsely populated area gained economic importance at the time of the Japanese rule over Taiwan due to the discovery of natural resources. Gold , copper and coal were mined here from the beginning of the 20th century . The place was connected to the railway network to transport the natural resources. The place name "Ruifang" was originally the name of a general store on the Keelung River, which was of great importance for the supply of the inhabitants, who mostly worked in the mines, and ultimately gave the whole place its name.
After the Second World War, the natural resources ran out and mining ceased. The disused conveyor systems and factories are now a tourist attraction and some of them have been opened to the public as museums. The Ruifang Gold Museum recalls the history of gold mining . Another national and international famous attraction is the picturesque historic shopping street in the Jiufen district .
