Shimen , also Shihmen , ( Chinese 石門 區 , Pinyin Shímén Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Chio̍h-mn̂g Khu ) is the northernmost district of the city of New Taipei in northern Taiwan , Republic of China . Cape Fugui , located in its area, is the northernmost point of the island of Taiwan.
Location and importance
Shimen borders in the southwest and southeast on the neighboring districts Sanzhi and Jinshan and in the north on the East China Sea . Cape Fugui with its lighthouse is the northernmost point of Taiwan and a popular destination for tourists. An international kite festival has been held in Shimen every year since 2000 .
The Chin Shan nuclear power plant, Taiwan's oldest nuclear power plant (commissioned in 1978), is located in Shimen . The two reactor blocks were shut down in December 2014 and March 2017.
Except for the coastal strip, the district is mountainous, sparsely populated and more rural in character. According to official figures, 12,789 people lived in an area of 51.26 km² in October 2013. Tangerines , peanuts and tea are produced as agricultural products .
The southern part of the district is part of Yangmingshan National Park .
