Yingge

Yingge ( Chinese  鶯歌 區 , Pinyin Yīnggē Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Eng-ko ) is a district of the city of New Taipei in northern Taiwan , Republic of China .

location

The predominantly hilly Yingge lies on the western edge of New Taipei and borders the neighboring districts of Shulin and Sanxia in the east and south and the city of Taoyuan in the north and west . Yingge is on the Dahan River .

History and meaning

The name of the district comes from the "oriole rock" (Chinese: 鶯 哥 石Yingge Shi ) located here, the shape of which is reminiscent of the shape of an oriole . In the current name of the district, the character 哥 ( Pinyin : ) has been replaced by the same character 歌.

Yingge has been settled by Chinese immigrants since the 18th century and is famous for its more than 200-year-old pottery tradition, the origin of which is due to the occurrence of good clay . The ceramics museum , which opened in 2000, gives an overview of the past and present of the local pottery trade. The Yinggeer pottery is now a tourist attraction; Especially in the old " Töpferstrasse " there are many ceramic, porcelain and other craft shops.
