Shuangxi ( Chinese 雙溪 區 , Pinyin Shuāngxī Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Siang-khe ) is a district of the city of New Taipei in the north of the island of Taiwan , Republic of China .
location
Shuangxi is located in the east of New Taipei City. Its neighboring districts are Pingxi in the west, Ruifang in the north and Gongliao in the east; to the south, the district borders on Yilan County . The largely hilly to mountainous landscape is traversed by the Shuangxi River in the north and the Beishi in the south .
History and meaning
The area of today's Shuangxi, originally inhabited by indigenous people , came under the influence of Spain and the Netherlands for a short time during the first half of the 17th century, as did other parts of northern Taiwan, who maintained bases here (see article History of Taiwan ). The settlement of the area by Chinese immigrants began at the end of the 18th century. Since the mountainous landscape only partially permitted agriculture, the population remained small. After the discovery of coal deposits , Shuangxi gained a certain economic importance due to coal mining at the beginning of the 20th century, which was lost again after the Second World War with the exhaustion of coal supplies.
Today Shuangxi is one of the most sparsely populated districts of New Taipei and, thanks to its partly picturesque landscape, is a popular excursion and recreational destination in the greater Taipei area.
