The Tamsui (also Danshui ; Chinese 淡水河 , Pinyin Dànshuǐ Hé , W.-G. Tan-shui Ho , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Tām-súi Hô - "fresh water river") is a river in the north of the island of Taiwan , Republic of China ( Taiwan) . With its main source river Dahan ( Chinese 大漢 溪 , Pinyin Dàhàn Xī - "Strong guy") it has a length of 158.7 km.
course
The Dahan rises in the northern part of the central mountain range of Taiwan, on the northern flank of the 3524 m high Pintian Shan (品 田 山) belonging to the Xueshan mountain range . Its source in the southeast of Hsinchu County is in Shei-Pa National Park . In its course mainly to the north, the river crosses the eastern part of Hsinchu County and Taoyuan City , where it is dammed for 16.5 km to the Shimen Reservoir , and then reaches the city of New Taipei . In the Taipei Basin it unites at Banqiao with its 81 km long right tributary Xindian coming from the southeast and from then on bears the name Tamsui.
The Tamsui forms the western border of the city of Taipei . After it has taken up the 96 km long right tributary Keelung in the northwest of Taipei , it leaves the Taipei Basin, flows between the Guanyin Shan in the southwest and the foothills of the Datun volcanic group in the northeast and flows into the Tamsui district northwest of Taipei shortly afterwards the Formosa street .
history
Up until the 19th century there was an important port at Tamsui, which then lost its importance due to siltation . Fort Santo Domingo in the Tamsui district , built by the Spanish in 1629, bears witness to this time . Located on the east bank of the river, Wanhua is the historic center of Taipei.
The modern port of Taipei, which is currently being expanded, is located in the Bali district south of the Tamsui estuary directly on the Formosa Strait.
