The Xindian ( Chinese  新店溪 , Pinyin Xīndiànxī ) is a river in the north of the island of Taiwan .

course

The Xindian rises in the Shuangxi district in the east of the city of New Taipei and runs through the cities of New Taipei and Taipei with a length of 82 km . Its main tributaries are the Beishi , the Nanshi and the Jingmei . The Xindian flows steadily westwards from its origin and takes its name from the Xindian district it passes through. In Banqiao , the Xindian unites with the Dahan to form the Tamsui River .

meaning

The Xindian plays an eminently important role in the drinking water supply of the northern Taiwanese cities. According to official information, 97.5% of the drinking water in the greater Taipei area comes from the Xindian. This service is provided by the Feicui dam , to which the river is dammed at Pinglin over a length of 510 m. However, since the Xindian is heavily polluted by sewage from households and industry, the authorities have recently made greater efforts to improve the water quality.

In the Xindian district, the river expands to Lake Bitan , a popular recreational area in the greater Taipei area.
