Villoria is a Spanish municipality in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile and León . It is located about 26 km east of the provincial capital Salamanca .

Place name

The name Villoria probably comes from the Latin Villa Aurea, city of gold (Castilian: Villa de oro). According to another interpretation, it could come from a personal name, Oria. Villoria was sometimes called Villoria la mayor (Great Villoria).

history

Until 712 Salamanca and the surrounding area were first under Roman, then Visigothic rule. After the conquest of Spain by the Moors , the country belonged to the emirate of Córdoba , and in 1085 it was given to Alfonso VI. Recaptured by León as part of the Reconquista . The foundation of the municipality of Villoria at the beginning of the 12th century AD took place as part of the repopulation of the country by the kings of León. Their importance was reflected in the name extension "Villoria la Mayor", which they received together with the neighboring municipality of Villoruela . In 1833, Villoria was incorporated into the province of Salamanca during a territorial reform and thereby part of the León region.
