Aldeadávila de la Ribera is a municipality ( municipio ) in northern Spain in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon . The writer Miguel de Unamuno called the place the 'heart' ( corrazón ) of the mountainous landscape of the Arribes del Duero .

Aldeadávila de la Ribera is located in the extreme northwest of the province of Salamanca at an altitude of about 680 meters above sea level. d. M. in the rocky landscape of the Arribes del Duero Natural Park near the border with Portugal formed by the Duero River . The provincial capital Salamanca is about 100 kilometers (driving distance) in a southeast direction.

In 1900 and afterwards the place had a constant population between 1850 and 2030. The jump to over 3000 inhabitants in the 1960s is related to the construction of the nearby dam ( Presa de Aldeadávila ); after its completion in 1964, the population has fallen back to normal.
economy
Agriculture, especially the planting of vines , olive and fruit trees, traditionally plays the largest role in the municipality's economic life. In addition, the place was already the mercantile and craft center of the region in the Middle Ages. Income from tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes ( casas rurales ) has increased over the last few decades.
Attractions
- The church of the place ( Iglesia San Salvador ) is a building of the 13th century, but in the 15th / 16th century. Century was profoundly reshaped. The bell tower , structured by horizontal cornices , which, with its two meter thick walls, was also designed as a defensive tower, impresses with its height of over 40 meters. On its third floor there is a vaulted hall for meetings. The pointed spire of the tower is surrounded by a parapet with integrated bell gables . As with many churches in northern Spain, the entrance to the church is on the south side. The apse is decorated with a baroque altarpiece by Diego de Salcedo .
- The Palacio de los Marqueses del Caballero-Aldeadávila de la Ribera is a classicist aristocratic palace from the 18th century. There is a cast-iron coat of arms on its outer wall .
- The Museo de Ecoturismo Las Majadas Arribeñas provides information about the geology as well as the fauna and flora of the Arribes del Duero Natural Park .
- From the Picón de Felipe viewpoint, located about five kilometers west of the village, and other miradores in the vicinity, there are impressive views over the Duero valley and the Presa de Aldeadávila dam, which was started and completed in the Franco era .
