Vilar Formoso is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Guarda district in Portugal .

Vilar Formoso train station on the Linha da Beira Alta

Vilar Formoso, which was mentioned as early as 1758, is particularly known as the border town between Portugal and Spain, one of the most important Portuguese border crossings is located near the city. The station is affected by the Linha da Beira Alta, among other things, on which the well-known " Sud-Express " night train stops on the way to Hendaye / Irun .
