Market fountain in Altensteig

The baroque market fountain in Altensteig , a town in the Calw district in Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1747. It is centrally located on the market square opposite the town hall and is a cultural monument of particular importance.

The fountain with an octagonal well trough and an octagonal well stock with an attached obelisk made of colored sandstone has an inscription on the eastern side with the names of the mayors Stoll and Lentz. On the southern side, towards the town hall, is the Württemberg coat of arms with the ducal crown and the year 1747. On the west side you can see the Altensteiger coat of arms with the ducal crown and in the north an empty cartouche . A wooden eagle originally stood on the crowning ball. The elaborate design with a fountain column and a trough decorated in relief testify to the city's will to represent.

The market fountain was first mentioned in a document in 1514. In 1747, today's fountain was created by the stonemasons Jacob and Christoph Reich from Dornstetten to replace the previous fountain that was destroyed by the collapse of the retaining wall .

The fountain is also a testament to the historical water supply in Altensteig. The wells in the upper town were fed by springs outside the town, the water of which was drawn off with dyke pipes .
