The entire Altensteig complex in Altensteig , a town in the Calw district in Baden-Württemberg , consists of the area of the castle , which is situated on a slight spur , and the upper town at its feet on the steep slope of the Nagold valley, which was created from a castle hamlet and is enclosed by side walls. The perimeter development at the foot of the slope and the surrounding open spaces also form part of the overall system .

The upper town has retained its original town silhouette and structure. The cityscape is still dominated by the mighty castle, the Protestant town church and the gabled residential buildings that sit on the steep slopes of the former town wall .

Due to its importance, Altensteig has been a complete complex according to Section 19 of the Monument Protection Act since 1983, and there is a special public interest in maintaining it .
