Mawjoudin Queer Film Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mawjoudin Queer Film Festival ( Arabic مهرجان موجودين للأفلام الكويرية, DMG Mahraǧān Mauǧūdīn li-l-Aflām al-Kuwīriyya ) is an annual film festival in Tunisia that shows queer films for the LGBT community. It has existed since 2018 and is the first queer film festival in Tunisia and all of North Africa . The Tunisian human rights organization Mawjoudin (“We Exist”) is organizing the festival. The focus is on films that show queer realities in the Global South.

motivation

The festival wants to create a space for queer people far from heteronormativity and homophobia . For security reasons, the venue is not announced publicly; interested people have to get in contact with the organizers in order to participate.

The organizers see the festival as activism: "We are not only trying to fight in court, but also through art."

history

The first festival took place from January 15 to 18, 2018 in Tunis . It received financial support from the Berlin Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation . 12 short and feature films were broadcast, but there were also concerts, discussions and panel debates on the subject of “Queer as Art” and “Queer as Resistance”.

The second edition will take place from March 22-25, 2019 in the center of Tunis. A total of 31 films from different countries in the Global South are to be broadcast. Performances, discussions and a theater workshop on queer theater will also take place.
