Old castle with heaven and hell in Altensteig

The city fortifications in Altensteig , a town in the Calw district in Baden-Württemberg , consist on the one hand of the walling of the palace complex from the middle of the 13th century, which is still largely in place today, especially in the north with large parts of the circular wall with battlements and two round towers (referred to as Heaven and Hell ) and moat .

The city, developing from the Nagoldtal upwards on a triangular ground plan, was surrounded by a city wall with three city gates and watchtowers . In the 18th century, the city wall, which had lost its defensive function, was interrupted in several places for reasons of fire protection. In the early 19th century the battlements were torn down and the base of the wall was sold to the neighboring house owners.

The lower gate in the south, the upper gate or Lindentor in the west and the Lutzentor in the east were demolished in 1785 and 1814 respectively.

The remains of the city fortifications have a high documentary value for the city's shape and history. In addition, the fortification of the castle complex, the partially preserved southern city wall and the former moat and kennel areas, which are still present today as green spaces, decisively shape the city's silhouette .
