Ali Artuner (born January 1, 1944 in Izmir , † February 14, 2001 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish football goalkeeper . Through his many years of work for Göztepe Izmir , he is very strongly associated with this association. On the fan and club side, he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. When he was playing, he was referred to as Moskova panteri (German: The Panther of Moscow). He stands with such players as Fevzi Zemzem and Nevzat Güzelırmak for the glorious time of Göztepes when they were the first Anatolian team to compete with the three big Istanbul clubs Galatasaray , Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş . He died of a brain tumor on February 14, 2001 in an Istanbul hospital . He was the uncle of the soccer goalkeeper and national player Cenk Gönen . Several sports complexes and tournaments are named after him in his hometown and main place of work, Izmir.

Player career

society

Artuner started playing football on the street and was discovered here by talent hunters of Göztepe Izmir . His club football career began when he was seventeen in the youth of Goztepe. For the 1961/62 season he was accepted as the third goalkeeper in the professional squad. Here he competed with the goalkeeper Burhan Şeflek and his substitute keeper Nevzat Okuyucu for the position of the goalkeeper. In the first season he came to six first division appearances. At the end of the season, Şeflek left the club, so Artuner only competed with Okuyucu. So he increased his stakes for the next season to 15. For the 1963/64 season, he captured the regular place, but lost it again. In the 1964/65 season he sat on the substitutes' bench except for three league encounters and was lost to Okuyucu and the newly arrived goalkeeper Seyfi Talay . The team finished the season in fourth place in the table and thus achieved the best placement in the club's history. For the new season, they took part for the first time in the club's history in the Messestädte-Pokal , the unofficial forerunner of the UEFA Cup , and were eliminated in the second round against TSV 1860 Munich . Artuner played at both trade fair cup matches and also had significantly more appearances in the league. The club finished the season in fifth place.

In the 1966/67 season Artuner finally achieved the breakthrough. He rose to the undisputed goalkeeper and kept this position, injury-related losses not considered, until the end of his career. In the league they were again fourth and thus repeated the club's record. Furthermore, they made it to the final of the Turkish Football Cup at the end of the season and lost to city rivals Altay Izmir after a draw on the regular game length . Artuner played a key role in both successes and was regularly nominated for the Turkish national team in the same season due to his outstanding performance .

In the 1967/68 season Artuner and Göztepe drew international attention to himself with an unprecedented success in the club's history. In addition to the fourth place in the table in the Süper Lig, they reached the third round in the Messestädte-Pokal . They prevailed in the 1st round against the Belgian representative Royal Antwerp and in the 2nd round against the Spanish top club Atlético Madrid . In the 3rd round they were eliminated from the Yugoslav representative Vojvodina Novi Sad . The following season they outbid this success. For the first time in the club's history, the Turkish Football Cup was won. They prevailed against the top club Galatasaray Istanbul in the final . In the trade fair cup they switched off in turn Olympique Marseille , FC Argeş Piteşti , OFK Belgrade and Hamburger SV and made it to the semi-finals. Hamburger SV withdrew from the competition and made it possible for Göztepes to reach the semi-finals. In the semifinals, the club was then defeated by the Hungarian representative Újpesti Dózsa SC . This success was to date the best that a Turkish team has achieved in a European cup competition.

In the 1969/70 season he successfully defended the Turkish Football Cup and thus achieved the second success in this competition. In the European Cup Winners' Cup , they got to the quarter-finals and were eliminated from the top Italian club AS Roma . Artuner made a name for himself during these two games against the Romans and received very good reviews from the Italian trade press. In the summer of 1970 they also won the Turkish Super Cup with a 3-1 victory over Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the 1970/71 season they were eliminated in the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 2nd round against the Polish representative Górnik Zabrze , but ended the Süper Lig in third place in the table and reached a new club record. In the following years Artuner lost with Göztepe the connection to the top clubs of the Süper Lig. Artuner himself played until the summer of 1975 and then ended his active football career. Two years later Göztepe rose for the first time in the club's history in the second highest Turkish league, in today's TFF 1. Lig .

National team

Artuner played for the Turkish national youth teams for the first time, during a U-18 encounter against the Greek U-18s. After four missions for the Turkish U-18s, he began to play for the Turkish national team from 1965 . He made his international debut on May 9, 1965 during a friendly against the Bulgarian national team . In the same year he took part in the ECO-Cup with the national team and finished second behind Iran. In 1965 he was nominated parallel to the regular national team for the Turkish U-21 national team and played a total of three times for this.

On October 16, 1966, the Turkish national team played a friendly encounter against the national soccer team of the USSR in the 40,000 spectator and sold-out Olympic Stadium Luzhniki . Here Artuner came on in the 17th minute of the game for the Turkish goalkeeper legend Turgay Şeren and was celebrated as a match winner by the specialist press with his outstanding performance in his team's 2-0 victory. After this encounter he was nicknamed Moskova panteri (English: The Panther of Moscow). This name is based on the nickname Turgay Şerens, who received the nickname Berlin panteri (German: The Panther of Berlin) after Turkey's 2-1 win against the German team in the Berlin Olympic Stadium . After this encounter Artuner ousted the aged but hitherto undisputed goalkeeper Şeren from this position. In 1967 Artuner took part in the ECO Cup for a second time with Turkey and this time won this tournament. In 1971, Artuner wore his country's national jersey for the last time during a European Championship qualifier against the Albanian national team . In total, he played 25 times for Turkey.
