Mustafa Özkan (born February 21, 1975 in Forchheim , Germany ) is a former German - Turkish soccer player . Because of his activities for Beşiktaş Istanbul and Gençlerbirliği Ankara , he is associated with these clubs.

Player career

society

Mustafa Özkan was born as the son of Turkish guest workers in Forchheim, Franconia . Here he began playing football in the youth departments of various amateur clubs. He later moved to the youth team at 1. FC Nürnberg . In the summer of 1993 he was accepted into the squad of the professional team at this club, but sat for two years either on the bench or played for the reserve team. In the summer of 1995 he moved to the top Turkish league for the traditional Turkish club Beşiktaş Istanbul . Here he was often set up as a strike partner of Stefan Kuntz by the German coach Christoph Daum despite the great competition in the forward position with Oktay Derelioğlu and Orhan Kaynak . Daum was fired shortly before the end of the season and replaced for the new season by the Turkish coach Rasim Kara . He preferred the very big Derelioğlu and the newly arrived Nigerian Daniel Amokachi in the storm . In addition to these two strikers, the players Kaynak and Serdar Topraktepe were used.

After Özkan saw no perspective for Beşiktaş, he moved to the 1997/98 season for the first division club Kocaelispor . Even with this club he could not win a regular place. So he was loaned to league rivals İstanbulspor for the second half of the season. After a mixed second half of the season, he returned to Kocaelispor in the summer of 1998.

After he was active for Kocaelispor until the summer of 1999, he left Turkey and moved to the 2nd Bundesliga with the Stuttgarter Kickers . In his first season for this club he came to regular appearances and scored two goals in 14 league games. The second season he was hardly considered by the coaching staff and only played six times.

In the summer of 2001 he had received an offer from the Turkish first division club Göztepe Izmir . Since Özkan was more of a reservist with the Stuttgarter Kickers, he accepted the offer and moved back to the Turkish league. Here the team was looked after by Rıza Çalımbay , a former teammate Özkan from his time with Beşiktaş. Under this coach Özkan played a successful season and scored ten times in 33 league encounters. His club missed relegation at the end of the season and was relegated to the TFF 1st Lig .

Çalımbay, who had already left Göztepe for the winter break of the 2001/02 season and took over the first division club Denizlispor , prompted his club management to commit Özkan for the upcoming season. Denizlispor had finished the previous season in 5th place in the table and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup of the 2002/03 season. Here you prevail in the 1st round against the French representative FC Lorient . In the next few rounds they surprisingly defeated Sparta Prague and Olympique Lyon and met the eventual UEFA Cup winner FC Porto in the round of 16 . They lost the first leg in Porto with 1: 6 against the Portuguese, who were looked after by the then rather unknown José Mourinho . In the second leg in front of a home crowd they reached a remarkable 2-2 and were eliminated. Özkan scored six goals in seven games this UEFA Cup season and thus had a significant share in his club's round of 16 participation, which was also the best result in the club's history. In the league they missed a renewed participation in the European competition with the 10th place in the table.

For the next season he moved to the first division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara . Here, Ersun Yanal was a young coach who had the intention of building a competitive team. Yanal, who previously looked after Denizlispor twice, played a significant role in bringing about the transfer. Gençlerbirliği had qualified for the 2003/04 UEFA Cup by a third place in the table in the preseason . With this club Özkan experienced a successful UEFA Cup season as before with Denizlispor. In the 1st round they prevailed against the English club Blackburn Rovers and switched off Sporting Lisbon in the 2nd round . In the 3rd round they met the Italian top club AC Parma . After winning the first leg in Parma surprisingly 1-0, they caused a small sensation in the second leg in front of a home crowd with a 3-0 win. In the second round they met later UEFA Cup winners Valencia . After winning the first game in front of a home crowd with 1-0, they lost the second leg with 0-2. With a score of 0: 1 Özkan saw the yellow-red card in the 88th minute of the game and weakened his team unhappily. Valencia scored the 0-2 in the 94th minute and advanced one round. Özkan had to live with many accusations for a long time after the game. Gençlerbirliği reached the final of the Turkish Football Cup in the same season and thus secured another participation in the UEFA Cup. The final game was lost 4-0 to Trabzonspor . Although Özkan fell short of expectations in the UEFA Cup, he scored 13 goals in 32 games in the league. At the end of the season, Yanal left the club and became the Turkish national coach . At Gençlerbirliği Erdoğan Arıca was hired as the new coach . After this coach fell short of expectations and was eliminated in the second round against Egaleo AO Athens in the UEFA Cup , Arıca was replaced by Oğuz Çetin in early October 2004 . Even under this new coach, the hoped-for improvement did not occur, so Ziya Doğan was introduced as the new coach for the second half of the season . This reached the hoped-for turning point. So you finished the league in 5th place in the table.

The successful coach Doğan could not come to an agreement with Gençlerbirliği in the contract extension and took over the first division team Malatyaspor for the new season . Doğan, known for wanting to work with the same players, learned of Özkan’s contract expiring and persuaded him to move to Malatyaspor. At Malatyaspor, the season was mixed for both Doğan and Özkan. So Doğan left the club before the end of the season. Özkan himself dissolved his contract at the end of the season after mutual agreement with Malatyaspor and moved within the league to MKE Ankaragücü . Here he played for two seasons and worked with coaches Hikmet Karaman , Hans-Peter Briegel , Hakan Kutlu and Ünal Karaman , among others .

With the expiry of his contract, he left Ankaragücü and moved within the league to the promoted Antalyaspor . The decisive factor for this change was the fact that Antalyaspor was looked after by his former coach Karaman. Under this coach, the club reached the runner-up in the TFF 1st Lig and thus promotion to the Süper Lig in the preseason . Özkan played a season for Antalyaspor and left the club towards promoted Diyarbakırspor , where his old sponsor Ziya Doğan looked after the team. After Diyarbakırspor got into financial difficulties, Özkan prematurely dissolved his contract after half a season and left the club.

For the second half of the season he moved to the second division Çaykur Rizespor . Here he only played for two months and, after mutual agreement with the club's management, dissolved his contract. In the summer he ended his active professional football career.

National team

Özkan played 15 times for the Turkish U-21 national team and scored five goals.

With the Olympic selection of the Turkish national team, he took part in the Mediterranean Games in 1997 and won the silver medal.

As part of a friendly against the Ukrainian national team , Özkan was nominated by the then national coach Şenol Güneş for the Turkish national team . In this game on February 12, 2002, he played his first and only international match.
