Ormskirk is a British market town in England in west Lancashire about 20 km north of Liverpool and 30 km south of Preston . It has 23,392 inhabitants (as of 2001) and is the administrative seat of the district of West Lancashire .

history

The city was founded by the Vikings , led by Orme . It is believed that Orme came to Christianity and that he created the church and thus gave the city the name: Orme's Kirk.

The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is Ormskirk's oldest building. It is one of the three churches in England that have a steeple with a steeple and it is unique that it has both a steeple and a defensive tower typical of England at one end.

In 1286 the monks of the nearby Burscough monastery were given the right ( Royal Charter ) by Edward I of England to hold a weekly market here. The market is still there twice a week on Thursday and Saturday.

Ormskirk is the seat of Edge Hill University with around 15,000 students.

Transport links

The main A59 is the road that connects Ormskirk with Preston in the north and Liverpool in the south. The city is the location of the northernmost station on the Merseyrail . In the past, this railway was also connected to Skelmersdale .
