Matthew De Abaitua (born 17th October 1971 in Ormskirk as Matthew Humphreys ) is a British writer.

Life

Matthew Humphreys grew up in Maghull , Merseyside , at the age of 21 he changed his name to Matthew De Abaitua. He studied English at the University of York and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia . From July 1994 he worked for six months as secretary for the writer Will Self and lived in his country house in Knodishall , Suffolk .

Between 1995 and 1999 De Abaitua was editor of the literary magazine The Idler . His short story Inbetween was included in the 1997 anthology Disco Biscuits . De Abaitua wrote a script for a short film that was broadcast on Channel 4 in 1999 . He worked for Channel 4 as a film editor for a while.

His first novel, The Red Men , was shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Science Fiction Literature in 2008 , with IF THEN , 2015 and The Destructives , and two more novels in the genre in 2016. Abaitua teaches creative writing at the University of Essex .
