John Arne Semundseth Riise (born September 24, 1980 in Ålesund ) is a former Norwegian football player . The left defender and midfielder was primarily known for his above-average stamina and general physical constitution during his playing time and had a noticeable shot strength and high precision, especially with his left foot. Like him, his younger brother Bjørn Helge was also a Norwegian international .
Club career
First career steps
John Arne Riise started his football career in his home country Norway at Aalesunds FK . During this time he was already a fixture in the Norwegian U-18 team. When he joined AS Monaco in the summer of 1998 after only 25 games for Aalesund's first team - before he came of age - quite a few experts feared that the leap into French Ligue 1 might be too early.
AS Monaco
Contrary to fears, Riise came straight away to some appearances in the top French team in the 1998/99 season. He made his debut for his new club on September 25, 1998 in the 3-0 championship win against AC Le Havre and had completed seven games at the end of the season. Riise finally celebrated his breakthrough in the 1999/2000 season, in which he became a fixture on the left side of the field and was able to win the French championship.
Also in the following season 2000/01 Riise began as a regular player in the defense line of AS Monaco. When the young Norwegian, who had already gained a foothold in his country's senior national team, expressed his intention to change, this led to a falling out with Monaco coach Claude Puel . Riise should therefore only come to 16 championship appearances in the entire season.
Offers for a move had been received from several English Premier League clubs and the management of Blackburn Rovers and Fulham FC made concrete efforts to sign Riise. Leeds United had already submitted a transfer offer in the amount of four million pounds in 2000. However, this had been rejected by AS Monaco because the club's management had asked for six million pounds. Somewhat surprisingly, after 44 league games and four goals for AS Monaco, Riise finally moved to Liverpool a year later for exactly these four million pounds .
Liverpool FC
Riise was Liverpool FC's first commitment in the summer of 2001. He returned with his new club to his old place of work in the European Supercup and faced Bayern Munich on August 24, 2001 in the Monegasque Stade Louis II . In the 3-2 win, Riise prepared a goal from Michael Owen in the first half of the game and was initially assigned the jersey with the number 18 (only after Markus Babbel left , he should have the vacant number 6 from the 2004/05 season " inherit").
During his first season with the Reds, Riise scored ten goals in all competitions, which was considered a particularly positive surprise in view of the fact that the newcomer mostly acted as a left full-back. Especially when he went it alone on September 15, 2001 in a 3-1 derby win against FC Everton , he quickly played his way into the hearts of his own supporters. With his free-kick goal on November 4, 2001 from almost 20 meters against Manchester United , he also demonstrated early on his talent as a long-range shooter, which was also valued in the further course. On the last day of the match, he rounded off the season with two goals for a 5-0 win against Ipswich Town . This brought Liverpool FC to second place in the table, which enabled them to qualify directly for the Champions League group stage .
The two subsequent seasons 2002/03 and 2003/04 brought no sporting development in the game of Riise, his personal performances stagnated similar to those of his team below the performance potential, which ultimately led to the commitment of Rafael Benítez to the new coach of Liverpool FC.
In the 2004/05 season Riise found back to old strength and he scored particularly noted goals against Charlton Athletic and West Bromwich Albion (there even twice). With his goal in the league cup final against Chelsea , he scored the fastest goal ever scored in a final of this competition - but after extra time the game was lost 3-2. At the end of the season, Riise was the club's top scorer in away league games. On May 25, 2005, Riise experienced the second high point in his footballing life after winning the French championship, when he played in the Champions League final against AC Milan in Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic Stadium . After the 0-3 halftime score, he prepared the goal to make it 3-1 for Steven Gerrard with a cross and after two more goals from Liverpool FC Riise was one of the shooters who took on penalties. Although his penalty was saved by Milan's goalkeeper Dida , his team finally won with a total of 6-5 goals.
Also in the 2005/06 season Riise built on the improved performance and in addition to winning the FA Cup , he and his team were able to improve significantly in the Premier League round. In January 2006 he signed a new contract that ran until the end of the 2008/09 season. During this season, Riise had again drawn attention to himself through some spectacular actions that cemented his legendary status as an exceptionally powerful player. This included his free kick in a 1-0 FA Cup win against Manchester United just before the end of the game, which was blocked by the opposing player Alan Smith with his leg. However, the harshness of the impact caused Smith to fracture his leg and dislocate his ankle. In the further course of the cup competition Riise had also scored the first goal with a free kick to the 2-1 semi-final against Chelsea , the shot going directly through a gap in the wall originally formed by the opponent. In the final, after beating West Ham United 3: 3 in regular time - as in the previous year's Champions League final - Riise was one of the shooters for the penalty shoot-out and converted his penalty kick. At the end of the season, rumors of an imminent move to Chelsea were increasing, but after the signing of Ashley Cole in this position, they proved to be irrelevant.
The 2006-07 season opened Riise with his goal in the Community Shield -Partie to 1: that ultimately 0 against Chelsea with a 2: 1 victory ended for Liverpool. Although he again scored a spectacular goal from over 30 meters against Tottenham Hotspur (final score 3-0) on September 23, 2006 , the weak team form in away games in autumn 2006 ensured that a number of Liverpool players gave up the championship race early . Riise publicly opposed this attitude, but ultimately could not prevent the clear 21-point gap to the new champions Manchester United.
AS Roma
After Riise had lost his regular place in the Liverpool team during the 2007/08 season to the Brazilian left-back Fabio Aurelio , he moved to AS Roma at the end of the season . Although there had been speculation about a transfer to various English clubs, he signed a four-year contract with the Italian capital club on June 18, 2008. The transfer fee was reportedly four million pounds, which could increase to five million pounds if successful.
Fulham FC
On July 13, 2011, Riise moved to London for Fulham FC , where he signed a three-year contract and also played on a team with his younger brother .
National team
After Riise had already played regularly in Norway's U-16, U-18 and U-21 teams, Nils Johan Semb was also the coach of the senior national team on the good performances of the attacking left-back in the championship season of AS Monaco caught on. In La Manga , Spain , Riise came on January 31, 2000 against Iceland (0-0) to his first international match, which was followed just two days later by his second appearance in the same place in a 4-2 win against Denmark .
Riise then established himself in the national team and in his third international match - a 2-0 away win against Turkey - he scored his first goal for Norway three weeks later. Success in the Norwegian national team should not be granted to him to this day. Participation in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea clearly missed Riise and his team with a disappointing fourth place in qualifying group 5. The subsequent Euro 2004 was withheld from him after the defeat in the qualifying matches against Spain . Two years later he again lost out in the play-off matches against the Czech Republic to take part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany and was also third in qualifying group C for the Euro 2008 in Austria and the Switzerland for Riise the meanwhile fourth missed final qualification in a row. On November 12, 2011, Riise played his 100th international match in a 4-1 draw against Wales . On August 15, 2012, he denied against Greece his 104th international game and put the 50 year old Norwegian National team record of Thorbjørn Svenssen one. With his 105th international match on September 7, 2012, he became the sole record national player.
