NGC 1 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in Pegasus at the northern sky. It is estimated to be 211 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 2 , it forms the optical pair of galaxies Holm 2 or KPG 2 , but the latter is about twice as far away, so there is no connection between these two galaxies.
In the same area of the sky there are still u. a. the galaxies NGC 16 and NGC 22 .

The object was discovered on September 30, 1861 by the German-Danish astronomer Heinrich Louis d'Arrest .
