NGC 7829 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 258 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter . Together with NGC 7828 , it forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 144 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of elliptical galaxies with emanating material (Arp catalog) .
The property was discovered in 1886 by Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
