NGC 6 = NGC 20 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is an estimated 230 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is considered a member of the NGC 7831 group ( LGG 1 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 13 , NGC 19 , NGC 21 , NGC 29 .
The object was discovered on September 18, 1857 by the Irish astronomer R. J. Mitchell , an assistant to William Parsons . Lewis A. Swift observed this galaxy on September 20, 1885. However, the double observation was not recognized, and so the galaxy now had two catalog numbers: NGC 20 (Parsons observation) and NGC 6 (Swift).
