NGC 28 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Phoenix the southern sky . It is estimated to be 425 million light years from the Milky Way and about 195,000 light years in diameter. Whether this galaxy, like its neighbor NGC 25, is also part of the Abell 2731 galaxy cluster is still being investigated.
In the same area of the sky there are still u. a. the galaxies NGC 25 , NGC 31 , NGC 37 .
The object was discovered on October 28, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
