NGC 48 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky. It is estimated to be 88 million light years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies NGC 49 , NGC 51 , IC 1534 , IC 1535 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on September 7, 1885 by the American astronomer Lewis A. Swift .
