NGC 54 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . We see this galaxy in "half profile", which makes it difficult to classify precisely. It is an estimated 242 million light years from the Milky Way and about 90,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies NGC 47 , NGC 50 , NGC 61 , NGC 64 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the German astronomer Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel .
