NGC 45 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBd in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 22 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a disk diameter of about 74,000 ly. The galaxy has an apparent visual magnitude of +10.7 mag and an angular size of 8.5 '× 5.9'.
From our view of the earth, NGC 45 is in the vicinity of various galaxies of the Sculptor filament , to which it was consequently assigned. The relative speed, which differs greatly from the other galaxies in this group, indicates that the galaxy does not belong to the Sculptor group, but rather lies behind it when viewed from Earth.
The object was discovered on November 11, 1835 by the English astronomer John Herschel .
