NGC 51 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 248 million light years from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies NGC 48 , NGC 49 , IC 1535 , IC 1536 are located in the same area of the sky .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2016gxp was observed here.
The object was discovered on September 7, 1885 by the American astronomer Lewis A. Swift .
