NGC 47 = NGC 58 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . The galaxy appears as a small, faintly oval spiral galaxy with a bright core. It is estimated to be 258 million light years from the Milky Way and about 175,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 50 , NGC 54 , NGC 61 , NGC 64 .

The object was discovered by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel , probably in 1886. Independently of this, Lewis Swift also discovered the object on October 21, 1886. As a result, a second entry in Dreyer's New General Catalog with NGC 58 refers to this galaxy.
