NGC 53 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type (R ') SB (r) ab in the constellation Toucan in the southern sky . It is about 200 million light-years from the Milky Way and is estimated to be 120,000 light-years across.
The object was discovered on September 15, 1836 by the British astronomer John Frederick William Herschel .
