NGC 49 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is an estimated 222 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies NGC 48 , NGC 51 , IC 1535 , IC 1536 are located in the same area of ​​the sky .

The object was discovered on September 7, 1885 by the American astronomer Lewis A. Swift .
