NGC 31 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc in the constellation Phoenix on southern sky . It is estimated to be 425 million light years from the Milky Way and about 165,000 light years in diameter. As with the neighboring galaxy NGC 28 , NGC 31 could be an unregistered member of the Abell 2731 galaxy cluster .
The galaxies NGC 25 and NGC 37 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on October 28, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
