NGC 55 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBm visible from the side in the constellation Sculptor in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 6 million light years from the Milky Way and 55,000 light years across. NGC 55 has an angular extent of 32.4 '× 5.6' and an apparent magnitude of +7.8 mag, making this spiral galaxy the twelfth brightest galaxy in the sky.

Although the star system is counted as part of the Sculptor Group , it has a radial velocity that suggests that it belongs to the Local Group . In fact, the galaxy lies on the border between the Sculptor and Local Groups. She is the brightest member of the NGC 55 group ( LGG 4 ).

NGC 55 and NGC 300 are only about a million light years apart, so it's believed to be a gravitationally bound pair.

The object was discovered by James Dunlop on August 4, 1826 . The pronounced eastern section of the galaxy, which the astronomer Lewis Swift observed on September 23, 1897, received its own entry in the index catalog ( IC 1537 ).
