The “IC” in the name stands for Index Catalog , an astronomical catalog of galactic nebulae, star clusters and galaxies, in which it is entered at 405th position. In English it is also called the Flaming Star Nebula ; further catalog names are Caldwell 31 and Sharpless 229.
