IC 401 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 145 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is considered a member of the NGC 1752 group ( LGG 126 ).
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 1779 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on January 30, 1786 .
