IC 404 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type S in the constellation Orion the northern sky . It is estimated to be 402 million light years from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter.

The object was discovered on March 9, 1893 by the astronomer Stéphane Javelle .
