IC 396 is a galaxy of Hubble type S? in the constellation Giraffe in the north star sky . It is estimated to be 46 million light years from the Milky Way and about 30,000 ly in diameter.

The object was discovered on October 19, 1890 by the astronomer William Frederick Denning .
