IC 409 is a merging spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type S in the constellation Orion in the northern sky . It is an estimated 376 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 412 , IC 414 , IC 2123 , IC 2124 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on January 12, 1894 .
