NGC 1097 = Arp 77 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . In the center there is a conspicuous ring around 5500 light years in size with strong star formation . This area is currently the goal of several research projects, including at ESO . There are clear indications of a black hole with about 100 million solar masses in the core of the galaxy (the black hole suspected in the center of the Milky Way , however, is only a few million solar masses).

The galaxy is estimated to be 53 million light years from the Milky Way and about 125,000 light years across. Immediately adjacent is the elliptical galaxy (type E4 pec) PGC 10479 ( "NGC 1097A" ) with a conspicuously box-shaped structure. It has a max. Expansion of around 12,000 light years and orbits its mother galaxy at a distance of approx. 42,000 light years.

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a small companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) . The disturbance of the spiral arms of NGC 1097 in the area of the companion is clearly visible in the ultraviolet and infrared range.

The supernovae SN 1992bd (Type II), SN 1999eu (Type IIPp) and SN 2003B (Type IIP) were observed here.

Together with NGC 1079 , IC 1830 , PGC 10479 and PGC 10709 it forms the NGC 1097 group .

The object was discovered on October 9, 1790 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
